On the northwestern shores of Kaua’i, at the end of the world’s deadliest hiking trail, there lies a stunning place: Kalalau. A decidedly open and peaceful place (when the helicopters aren’t buzzing tourists about), when I arrived there after the eleven mile hike in, a shirtless, tanned and smiling woman approached me and welcomed me by placing a lei around my neck. A group of us (very tan line free) waded just out of reach of the undertow to keep cool in the afternoon sun. And back up by my sandcastle lounged the beach bum.
